2026 Slow Stitching Project - Page 15 - H1

I am following K3N Cloth Tale's 2026 slow stitching project.

The prompt was Hexagon.  She taught a new way to do Hexagon in stitching.  Mine turned out elongated.

I chose a variety of honey colored yellow thread from my ORTs tin.

Make the vertical stitches, offset the second row then wrap between the rows.

She taught a super easy Hexagon accent which I made from golden yellow fabric onto which I  added a Heart Button.  I added a bee button as well to go with the Honey theme.

Sewing Project - Tea Pot Mats

I made up some tea pot mats for my sister as the fabric did not speak to her.  If for sure did to met.

The fabric was square panels of these tea/coffee related images. The panels measured 11.5 inches square with a black border.

The sandwich is 100% cotton. The panel on the top, then a layer of cotton batting, then a layer of cotton terry cloth and a bottom layer of cotton for the backing.

I used my walking foot to sew this project. With black thread in the machine I topped stitched around the image.  The backing was cut to 14" square to allow a self binding. The backing is black so that worked well with the black border around the image. I used clips to hold it all in place and then made my final top stitching seam all the way around.

For the red one I chose red cotton fabric for the back because I did not have enough black.  It would have been better but we can always have what is best.

On this one I quilted the square on the red with red thread in the machine which I think worked better.

The self binding was folded once and then folded to encase the sandwich edge and the fold is on the front.  I decided to leave a small line of the black border to add contrast.

Same sandwich as described earlier in this post.

The blue one got black backer fabric as well.

The quilting was done just inside the center panel edge with black thread.

The black backer was brought forward to create a self binding on the mat.

On the corners I folded the sides first then the top and bottom and stitched a square on the corner.  With such small dimensions mitered corner would have been challenging.

Finished size is just a slight bit over the 11.5 inches I started with.

These are headed back to her.

Sewing Project - Fabric Vase Wrap -The Blues

On this vase wrap I used blue printed fabric scraps.  For a change I sewed them on the diagonal to my flannel foundation fabric using the Quilt As You Go method.  This takes more fabric so I had to find longer strips of fabric.

I trimmed the piece to 8.5" T x 11"W to allow more of a flap extending from the body of the wrap.  I added a teal cotton poly fabric as the lining which is visible behind the lace.  I sewed the collage piece and the lining right sides together leaving an opening, trimmed the corners and turned it right side out. I then used a curvy decorative stitch to top stitch all around the edge closing the opening at the same time.

Then, it was time to consider how to embellish this piece. I stitched a piece of lace on the lining edge folding the ends top and bottom and used the same curvy decorative stitch.  I then place the wrap around the bottle vase, pinned it and then stitched it closed.

Cardmaking - Houses

I made a slow stitching card.  Very time consuming but relaxing.

I started with the beige background fabric.

I created the body of the house with 2 pieces of paisley fabric. Then stitched it to the background.

After aligning the chimney to edge the house body I stitched it on before the roof.

I added the roof in olive green fabric.

I added the window and the door.

Then I added the smoke and the bird in the sky and the green grass base at the bottom.  I used gold sewing thread.

I mounted it to a Kiwi Kiss card base with some strategically placed stitches in the four corners of the card.  This card has a half sheet insert to cover the stitching on the inside of the card. White insert and envelope.

I used some watercolor paper I made a while back.

Using the house thinlits I cut the bright watercolor paper. I then cut a chimney by hand.

I cut a Baja Breeze house in a smaller size.

I designed a greeting which I trimmed to leave a small border when adhered to the blue layer.

I chose a deep yellow card base onto which the layers were adhered.

White quarter sheet insert and envelope.

I drew a house which I printed on watercolor paper.

I watercolored it with Stampin Up Watercolor Wonder Crayons. Blue house, brown roof, red chimney, yellow windows, green door, flower boxes, a bush out front and a stone walkway.

The extras were drawn with my fine tip black Sharpie marker.

Trimmed to leave a small border on an A2 card base.

Adhere to the dark green card base.

White quarter sheet insert and envelope.

I started with a Tempting Turquoise A2 card base.

I cut the middle layer from a piece of watercolor paper I created a while ago.

I cut the white layer with the next size house thinlit.

I glued the chimney cut from an extra piece of the same watercolor paper to the back of the white layer on the right hand side.  Then adhered that to the card front.

I then distressed the watercolor paper with a bit of sand paper and then glued the greeting on top of it.

This was then adhered to the white layer.

A white quarter sheet insert and envelope.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

Another terrific sunrise this week.

Dramatic, overcast with some sun.

We have had a lot of dreary overcast days since snow arrived which makes winter a little harder to take.

Sunny Alberta is missing so I just had to take a hint of sunshine when it arrived.

It was the first Sunday of Advent on Nov 30th.

The first candle of Advent is HOPE.  It symbolizes hope and the promises made by God especially the coming Messiah.

I need to read my Ann Voskamp book which provides information for preparing for Christmas during this Advent Season.

I had a chance to visit with a couple of my sisters, a brother in law and niece when my sister's grandson was playing in a minor hockey game in a town about an hour away.

I dressed up to sit in a cold arena and watched the last period of the game and his team won!

There were a couple of  options for lunch so we headed to the pub for lunch.

The food was very good and I shared Butter Chicken with a sister.

I was able to get home before the sun went down which I was very happy about.

We had a good visit - Christmas, trips planned, next Christmas which will be a large one, my niece's new job and much more.

I had a few gift cards to wrap this week so I checked out my sister's post and loosely based mine on hers. I did have to ask her about it.

It's a long piece of fabric where you fold in both ends of the fabric. Then press the ends even which folds the remaining fabric in half with a fold at the bottom.

Top stitch both sides closed and your are done. She put ribbon on hers I did not.

I did add some accent fabric on the front piece after I folded but before I sewed the side seams. Needs refinement I would say but I was able to fill mine and have them ready which was the goal.

We had a pot luck meal hosted in the social room of our building.

Everyone brought a dish and we shared a meal with our neighbors.

As always the food was very good and there was plenty. I had one helping leftover of my scalloped potatoes.  I brought home a piece of chicken and chocolate cheesecake.

It was a very good time.

Looking forward to next year when I am sure I will know more people.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

There was ice on the pond this morning.

The birds were flying in their V formations getting the youngsters in shape of the long trip.

There was frost on everything.  The leaves on the ground, the tansy that was still yellow, and the bulrushes at the pond's edge.

Back to exercising indoors with Jules at Improved Health.

Loving the 80's music.

It is taking a while to have things as I want them.  The sound bar was sitting a piece of lumber on Dad's box under the TV. Not pretty and I wanted ventilation there as the registers are there.

I have used these pine wood shoe racks for all manner of organization in my home.  I had one left and it came from the thrift store.  When I came to put it together I understood why.  The slots on the legs were too narrow to accommodate the shelves sliding in.

I dug my Dremel tool with a cutting wheel and removed an 1/8 th inch from the 3 slots on each of the four legs.

These blue clamps have been a game changer for this time of work.

It looks good with Dad's train in front.

Pat, Man & Bobbin Quilting was one of the vendors at the quilt show last week.

Pat dyes all the 100% cotton fabric. I spoke to her for a few minutes.  The sell fabric and batting as well as long arm services.

I bought 6 bundles of unique fabric which consists of scraps from the dyeing process. Scraps works for me and the fact that they are all unique is wonderful. Looking forward to using this fabric in my slow stitching.
I bought this bin because it fit under the serger desk and it was right at hand when I am sewing.  But at times it would be pushed too far under the desk and it was hard to get back because it is a tight fit in the space.

This week I added a knob handle to the bin so that I can retrieve it easily. I had to add a spacer because the bolt is designed to go on a drawer front.
I needed a new sweater.  The old one I had been wearing for about 10 years.  With all the renovations it had acquired paint stains, snags and just not looking great.

I went shopping at the thrift store and was surprise at how difficult it was to find the features I wanted.  It had to have a zipper and pockets.  Out of the many I looked at there were 3 that met the criteria.  I chose the navy one.

It is acrylic and cozy so I am very happy with this addition to the wardrobe.

I received a bit of money from family at my house warming party.

I wanted some new flatware because the ones I am using are 50 years old ( I received at graduation) and some pieces have gone missing. I added some from the thrift stores as I found some I liked. It was a mish mash.

I did a lot of research. Again, the options are numerous.  I wanted good quality and decided a set of 8 would do.  I will keep some of my thrifted ones as well to get me to a set of 12.

I added to the dollars I received and with these being on sale, it worked out really well. I am very grateful for my family.

Sewing Project - Fold Over Wallets

I had a piece of RFID fabric to make 3 more wallets so I just used the scrappy fabric I made this morning and cut it up into 3 pieces.

I am happy to have gotten 3 different colored wallets.

I found some bright green cotton polyester broadcloth for the lining for the 2 on the right hand side.  The blue one on the left got a white and blue polyester fabric lining.

All of them got blue elastic.

These will be available in the Christmas Store at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery at Heavy Metal Place in December 2025.

Sewing Project - Fabric Scraps - Scrappy Fabric

This fabric will amp up the look of the fold over card wallets.

I picked a bunch of small fabric scraps in yellows, browns, and oranges.

I set my sewing machine to zigzag pattern #5 and the stitch length to just below 0 and stitch width to 4. It creates a blanket stitched look with the sewing machine.

I cut a foundation piece of thin polycotton broadcloth to 12 x 16 inches. I just placed one piece and stitched around and kept adding pieces. To have the looks the raw edge of the fabric needs to face left as I am stitching. I have started using up my spools of thread as mostly I use cones these days.  I emptied 3 bobbins during this project. Excellent.

This piece is not trimmed.  My plan is to cut this piece into 3 pieces of 5 x 11 inches for fold over card wallets.   The process creates a new piece of scrappy fabric from fabric scraps.  Stash busting!!!

Here's a close up of the over stitching I did along the raw edges of the small pieces of fabric I used to make this new fabric.

It somewhat mimicks blanket stitch.  Choice of thread will determine whether it shows up a lot or just blends into the overall color scheme of the fabric.

I think I should have overlapped the fabric a bit more than I did.  When I made it into a wallet depending on where the fold was it was possible to have the background fabric show.

Sewing Project - Card Wallets

I am way behind on my product for the Christmas Store.  I found these card wallets which I thought worked really well.  The wallet has 2 secure pockets as well the center pocket which is just open.  I love the contrast between the print and the solid fabric which creates a petal pattern in the middle of the wallet.  Sew on snaps keep the front and back pockets closed.

You can carry all kinds of cards in this wallet. Loyalty cards, library card, business cards, and maybe even credit cards.  I prefer to carry those cards protected with RFID.

It starts with a circle measuring about 11.50 inches in diameter.  I added an extra layer in the middle center to stiffen the wallet a bit.  It was sewn to the back lining before I sewed the circles together.  Once stitched I turned the right side out and ironed fold in half along the stitch lines of the bit of extra fabric. I top stitched all the way around to finish off the circle and close the slit.

I ironed the circle in half with the patterned right side up. I measured 4 inches from the fold and sewed a seam creating the petals. I then opened the petals and aligned that seam with the fold in the middle of the circle. Ironed that very well.

I folded the piece in half backwards keeping the petals on the front and now on the back.   I marked the top of the petals and marked the place on left and right edges. I sewed the edges closed.  I hand stitched the snaps on the front and back pockets.  And that was it

Here's the second one I made with feather fabric and red solid fabric.

I paid better attention to the sewing of the circle and I think it turned out well.

Slow Stitching project - May - Tiny Fabric Book

I wanted to add a small fabric book to my slow stitching project in which I would write my favorite authors.

I started with a dark blue piece of fabric paired with a bit thin blue fabric. I handstitched the outer edge and turned it right side out. I top stitched the outer edge to close the slot used for turning.

I cut a piece of white cotton for the pages on the inside. Finished it measures 2.75" x 2.25 inches.

I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how to get the words in the book.  I knew I was not stitching them.  I investigated adding sizing to the fabric allow me to hand write the words. Finally, I decide to use freezer paper on the back and a Micron black marker. That worked really well. I then hot ironed the white cotton to set the ink.

I added a small elastic closure on the right hand side and a tiny blue button on the front cover to hold the book closed.

This book was stitched onto my books square for the May slow stitching project I am working on.

Slow Stitching - No. 051 - Grid Journal Slow Stitching Style

K3N Cloth Tales Slow Stitching Challnege 2024

Week 51 - Grid Journaling Slow Stitch Style.

I stitched my 4 squares onto a piece of blue cotton with a foundation layer with stem stitch.  Four different colors.

I then cut a few snippets of fabric to stitch at random in these squares.

It turned out quite bright and I was happy with it.

Card - Inktense Painting

I made a card with my Inktense "Sunrise" painting.

I stitched the black outliner lines with a single embroidery floss. This is tightly woven cotton and was not fun to stitch.

I chose a SU Garden Green A2 card base.

I ripped the painting to the edges of the color.  I tacked it down with stitches in the corner to a piece of white card stock that was trimmed to leave a wide border.

I glue the white layer to the front of the card base in the landscape orientation.

Added a white insert on the inside with a envelope.

It is ready to give!

Inktense Fabric Painting - Sunrise

I decided to invest in Derwent Inktense ink colors for coloring fabric. My sister and nieces have had them for a while.

The come in different formats - pan, pencil and blocks.

I chose the pans since I do  some watercolor and they were the least investment should it not work out.  I also went to Delta Art and bought the Inktense 2400 Outliner which is a black drawing pencil not is non soluble so it will not run when you paint over it

My sister and niece have experienced the color seeping into other areas of their embroidery when painting with water.  Several videos I watched suggested using aloe vera gel instead of water to activate the ink.

I drew my composition on a piece of cotton with the Outliner then painted. I had some pure aloe vera gel in my fridge so I decided to give it a try.  It works very well.

I just a small brush for my edges and concentrated ink.  I used my regular watercolor ceramic palette and blended colors as I wanted with the gel. You do have to rinse your brush in water when changing colors.  The seeping you see on the roof of the house was a result of my not drying my brush after using water to rinse so it was too fluid and so it ran.

I set the painting with my hot steam iron.  I ran it in water after the setting and the color did not run at all.

Yes, this is a winner.

Oil Diffusers - Travel Case - Set 1

Blue Bird of Happiness - This diffuser features a bluebird sitting on a branch applique with stitched flower in the upper left corner. The back is a light blue denim with a blue felt drop, a loop and hanger.

Blanket stitched all the way around to kept both layers together.  All fits in a clear plastic travel case.

Embrace Life - This diffuser features layered felt flowers with a dark center which would work well for a spot to place the essential oil.  The flowers were appliqued to green felt using running stitch and long stitches. The leaf was stitched in place first with the flowers overlapping it.  The back on this one is light mustard linen fabric with a brown drop, green loop and a hanger.

Again, blanket stitch all the way around. All fits in a clear plastic travel case.

Be Happy - A happy face is always fun and uplifting. I used a white felt background for good contrast. I cut the yellow circle then used a hole lunch to create the eyes then filled them with black felt circles. These were stitched in place. The smile was stitched in stem stitch then a satin stitch on the outer edge.  That took a long time.  I used a piece of quilting cotton in coordination colors for the back.  The edge of the cotton is folded over before stitching to provide a finished edge. The back has a yellow loop and felt drop and a hanger.

Blanket stitched all the way around the perimeter with yellow embroidery cotton. All fits in a clear plastic travel case.

Wine O'Clock - I  hope that I have conveyed the message clearly enough with the clock in a wine glass. I chose a bright red felt for the background then cut a white circle for the clock. Black French Knots do for the numbers and then I stitched the hands.  I then stitched the wine glass in grey thread to represent glass but maybe black would have been better.   The back is a grey fabric to coordinate with the grey on the front.  A black loop,a red felt drop and a hanger on the back.

Again, blanket stitched all the way around with red thread. All fits in a clear plastic travel case.

For overall information you can check  Oil Diffusers - Hand Stitched Original Designs with Travel Case.

Oil Diffusers - Hand Stitched Original Designs

I have been working on these diffusers all week.  These are all hand stitched with my original designs. They measure approximately 3.75" square. The fronts are felt with fabric as the backer.

I came up with this design to provide diffusers in a travel case. These cases are nice because they are transparent.

The diffuser can rest in the slot and stand in your personal space to provide a relaxing scent based on the essential oil you have chosen.  The oil can be placed any where on the felt but depending on the ingredients of the oil it may discolor so I have provided a drop on the back for that situation.

I have added a loop above the drop with a small hanger so it can be hung in your personal space of horizontal space is at a premium.

They are very cute and appealing.

Slow Stitching - No. 030 - Cloth Folding

This week's prompt for K3N Cloth Tale's slow stitching challenge is cloth folding.

I took a much different approach.  I found a rayon garment at the thrift store for a very good price.  It was soft and draped very nicely.  Now to the ReUse center for a piece of cotton.  I found a peachy piece of cotton.  Yes!

All washed up, I kept the hem on the piece of fabric and just cut it down to create a lovely draped piece. Think a curtain, a shirt, a skirt and much more.

I hemmed the piece of cotton first. I then placed my draped fabric and stitched it down.  I used a piece of black felt as a finish for the top raw edge of the drape. I stitched all the way around with black thread, now for decoration I added some daisy stitches in the deep burgundy and seed stitches in the aqua.

It is a very different piece for me.  I am caught up and look forward to Monday's video.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

A visit to the St. Albert Botanic Park yielded some great shot. The is Jacob's Ladder and it will likely make the calendar at the end of the year.

Gorgeous color and wonderful delicate flower.

There were a few roses open, the peonies were on the verge of opening.

With a few more days of sun the gardens will be looking really good!

Attic Treasures by four authors who have written romances into each story.

This book was 4 short stories about Lydia Dunmore, a grandmother getting ready to sell her large home to move to a seniors residence.

She has invited her 4 granddaughters to visit her attic and pick the one item which was their favorite.

Sheila is looking for her grandmother's doll but it has been sold.  With the help of a local antique store owner she searches for the doll.
Kimber chooses an old fishing tackle box and through the help of a local fisherman discovers that some of the lures therein are quite valuable.
Lauren cherishes a christening gown her great grandmother wore.  She has chosen career over motherhood.  Her husband buys a farm and they leave the city. She did survive the transition and the gown came in handy.
Jessica takes an antique dress from Grandma's attic. Inside she finds old papers and photographs.  There was an adoption and the identity of her father is in question. Lydia shares what she knows. It is all very mysterious and there's a photojournalist chasing a story. It all turns out well in the end.

There was a large stash of fabric yardage which appeared at one of the thrift stores.

The price was unbelievable.

Did I need another piece of fabric? No but I could not help myself.  Will I have a chance to sew this summer with the renovations planned.  Unlikely. Still I brought home 5 pieces for less than $10.  Averaging about .75 of a meter. Some less some more.

Beautiful blue purple watercolor, a denim blue vintage geometric, rainbow with gold dots, a yellow blender and a turquoise batik.

Just the right size for a book cover, a placemat, or a wine bag.   We shall see.

I had lunch with a dear friend.  Vietnamese noodle bowl is always delicious and this was no exception.

Meeting at 1:00pm after the lunch time rush we had great conversation and caught up on our lives and what we have been up to.

She is headed on a big vacation.

I was invited to celebrate a birthday this week.

The birthday girl hosted lunch at her house.

It was very delicious and I was able to catch up with extended family.

Dessert was an upside down cake with blueberries with whipped cream on top.  A good cup of tea and good company.  It was a lovely afternoon.

Slow Stitching - Embellishments to Book Bags

I went back and revisited my book bags and chose embellishments for some of the earlier ones.

1. I added a dragonfly charm on a peice of blue felt

2. An orange cloth flower on a blue bag.

3. A yellow and green circle accent for the masculine striped one.

4. Just a bit of a strip of turquoise fabric with stitching for the first one I made.

You will see that I have added a "My Bag" tag to each of them as well.

Sewing Project - Pojagi Fabric Bags

I added to the piece of Pojagi fabric I made the other day.  I added some on the length and width.

I then had enough fabric to make 2 reusable bags. They both measure about 12x12 square.  I added handles from scrap fabric.

For this bag I added handles in grey polycotton blend fabric which will wear well.  It came in the box of fabric I was given so bonus. The strip was cut 2 inches resulting in approximately 5/8 inch wide strip.

I sewed the handles right to the bottom to distribute the weight in the bag along a better distance. In this case I sewed the strip and then turned it inside out which was a challenge being so narrow.

Top stitched it on both sides of the strip on both handles on both sides of the bag.

This one again measures approximately 12x12 inches square.

For this bag I decided to cut down on the work.  I ironed the 40 inch handle strip of navy microfiber in half then ironed in both edges then just stitched it from the top. Folded in the raw edges at both ends before I sewed the seam.

Then I just used a decorative stitch on my sewing machine to sew the handles all the way down the front and back of the bag. Back stitched where the handle meets the top of the bag and at the bottom of the bag.

This took much less time.

These are being donated.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

We had a snow storm this week.

It was blowing and snowing pretty hard.

I can barely see the building one street over  through the snow.

I did purchase a fabric marker from Walmart because I wanted one to create designs for embroidery which will wash out after the stitching is done.

Then just after I bought at retail I found this set of markers at Restore.

I have plenty for my needs now for my slow stitching.

I found this Clover Kanzashi Flower Maker Pointed Petal small at Goodwill this week.

I was wanting to make flowers to decorate my bags and thought this would work well.

It does work well but the flowers are quite small.

Once I understood the concept I could make a large one with out the gadget.

At the same time my sister was looking for something similar.

You can check out the method and flower she made in this post.

I have made flowers both ways and it works quite well.  The pentagon flower requires quite light fabric as it needs to bunch a lot to make the petals.
