Sylvia's Simple Shots

I dropped by a green house yesterday on my way back from a short morning of photography.  I managed only 10 shots before I was out of battery and I had not recharged the extra from my trip the day before so more more photos for me.

I walked around the botanic garden just to get the exercise I needed and the greenhouse did not open till 10 am.

I was at the door at 10am and wandered around to eventually find the Sansevieria / Snake Plant / Mother-in-Law Tongue plant.

It measures about 7 inches high so the price of $13 dollars was worth it.  This is not likely the final decorative pot for it but it will do for the photo shoot.

I did some investigation of the Pothos or Devils Ivy and it is soaking wet so that is why it is not doing so well.   I have to learn to water according to the plants needs and not just once a week.

I am learning and now I have 7 plants which a huge improvement over 0 when I worked.  Just did not have the energy and connection to handle it then.

We had several days in the last 10 which were what I would call heat wave days.  Above 30C in the day and the overnight temperature not dipping below 18C.

I had to put a dark sheet in the dining room window to keep the morning sun out of my place.

Thank goodness it did not last as long as last year.

I made a bottle full of Lemon Dijon Vinaigrette this morning.  Love this dressing on almost anything.  I use it for salads, I put it on my fish for the bake oven fish dish, and just to add a tang of flavor to a whole grain dish.

You can find the recipe here in Jenn Segal's French Grated Carrot Salad posting.

I just store in a cleaned out Dijon Mustard plastic jar in the fridge.  I double the recipe.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The Road Home by Tommy Tenney and Mark Andrew Olsen.

It is a Naomi and Ruth story based on the bible but set in modern times.

The women are living in Las Vegas and have fallen on hard times.  They have both lost husbands in the last few years and Ruth is Naomi's daughter in law.  Naomi is now in her 60's and wants to go home to Pennsylvania where she grew up.  Ruth grew up in the foster system and has no real home so decides to make her home with Naomi.

They travel across the country in an old Impala that Naomi's husband had both here years ago.  They work along the way to have enough cash to get HOME.

Beautiful story!

I want to do some work on the kitchen.

I painted the middle panel of the kitchen doors in 2017.  You can check out the improvements made then in this post

Now I want to paint all of the cupboards in order to freshen up the kitchen again.  I have chosen a light yellow and a warm grey in craft paint to paint paper which I will tack up against the cupboards to make a decision on a color.

I did investigate replacing the hinges but that was a no go as they have changed - the holes are not in the same place and the plates are not the same size so I think they will just be painted.

I want to had knobs or handles to the doors and drawers but I have not made a final decision on those yet.

I will post updates as they happen.

I played hide and seek with a Northern Flicker the other day.  They are a wood pecker which spends a lot of time on the ground looking for food.
An enjoyable time.

Flickr Macro Monday was Miniature.

I got this miniature Tupperware Thatsa Bowl key chain in my prize from reunion raffle.  It is so cute and you can see the lid comes off.  I have a couple of the regular sized bowls in the Tupperware in the cupboards.

Love the color of this bowl as well.  The ones I have are white and red.

Have a great week.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

The Sunflowers in the neighborhood and community garden are getting really nice.

They are my favorite flower and I have to wait all summer for them to produce gorgeous flowers.

I see that I captured a bee in this shot as well. Wonderful!

I found out one of the mazes in the area have opened their cut your own sunflower area. For a $ a bloom you can bring some home.  What a great idea!  The season is almost over and they will be letting them go or cutting them down themselves.  People enjoy them, the farm gets bit more cash and there is less to manage! Win Win.

I tried a new recipe this week which is Lemon Vinaigrette which is super delicious.

Here I have put it on my carrot salad and my fried basa fillets.

A terrific wholesome story which I finished this week.  An Irish Country Girl by Patrick Taylor.  A story of how Maureen O'Hanlan became Kinky Kincaid.

Kinky is the housekeeper for a group of medical doctors in the north of Ireland.  She has been there for 40 years but this is the story of how she came to be Ballybucklebo.

A bit of fairy stories and having the eyesight to see what may come to pass.  Ambition to be a teacher, willingness to stick with her plan despite a man saying she could not work after marriage, and a desire to travel the world.

She is open to love with the "right" man. With older brothers there a few guys in the running.

I guess I love Ireland after reading all the Maeve Binchy books.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

I visited a new wetlands area on Telford Lake this week.  Someone on my Instagram @smdpics100 had been and I was inspired to go as well.

I found this juvenile American Robin singing to her hearts content. I have been fascinated with their interesting coloring.  I have never notice this before but I have seen many this year.

I have to confess that I have done a switcheroo on the sky.  The original was very plain and quite uninteresting. On the same day I had captured the sky with incoming plane as this lake is close to the airport.  I removed the plain sky and added this bit of cloud.

Love it!

The Flickr Macro Monday challenge this week was "glass".  There so many options to stay within the 3" rules that I was overwhelmed with choice. Glass is not always the easiest to photograph with reflections, etc.

I chose shots of my Kaleidoscope for the mosaic because it was a little too large for the challenge but I love it!

There are 2 copper encased wheels top left and bottom right to produce a wide array of images through the eye piece which is the top right photo. One of the images I captured through the eye piece of yellows and blues angles.

You can check out my Flickr Photostream SMDPics to see the image I submitted for the challenge.

This image was glass head straight pins.  I have quite a few and thought this will be easy.  Turns out I have plastic balls at the end of most of my straight pins. Five is all I found that were actual glass.  The wonders of making things for cheaper.

Sylvia Simple Shots

I found Black Terns at the John Poole Wetlands on Sunday.  They were being very protective and almost dive bombing me so there must be a nest close by.

This is a new bird for me.   I have not seen them before in my area.  Black Terns eat mostly small fish and insects. Male and female select the nest site together.

I know that we have more flattened bull rushes in this wetland compared to other years.  It makes it easier for us on the platform to see into the wetland.  That is how I saw the Sora Rail the last time I visited.

Loved learning more about this bird and it's life and behaviour.  You can see the rain.

I made Bavarian this week and brought a few over to my sister's while we had a social distance visit.

I have one more package of raspberries in the freezer so I will have to find a source.  The friend where I have picked in the last couple year has moved down east.  A call to my other sister may be needed.

This was a combo of raspberry and rhubarb.  I added a cherry as that was the only fresh fruit I had.  You can check out the recipe in this post.

I normally serve this with store bought chocolate wafers but I was not headed out for just that!  I found a great recipe for Chocolate Wafers which was really tasty!

This is the book that has been on my night table in recent days.  It was a nice change from those I read recently.

Each chapter is a story of an incident from his small animal veterinary practice in England in the 1940's.  He was in practice for nearly 50 years.

Some hilarious, some moving and touching, some just plain hard work.

Most of the stories are set in the fictional town of Darrowby.  James Herriot is a pen name for James Wight.  He wrote many books.

I have seen animals other than birds this week.  On the top is muskrat eating bull rushes.  We were all wet myself included.  I was prepared with a plastic bag for the camera and my rain jacket so I was comfortable.

A Barn Swallow fledgling was taking refuge from the rain in a small hole in a municipal sign designed to remind dog walkers to pick up after their pets. The holes I think were meant to hold plastic bags.   On Sunday they held small birds.  There was 3 holes and birds filling 2 of them.  I felt for these little ones.  Having to sort out feeding themselves and it has rained for 4 days.  Miserable weather.

The coyote I was warned about by a fellow walker in the river valley.  She was walking a fairly large dog and the coyote had not really been intimidated by her or the dog. Great! I thought.   I walked on fully aware of my surroundings.  Just a few minutes later he came out of the bush on one side of the trail and stopped to eye me.  Thankfully he just moved on across the trail and headed down towards the golf course.

I am due for a large grocery shopping trip so some ingredients are in short supply.  I had bought an avocado and wanted to make a salad.   Found a great recipe but the dressing was the best part.

Veggie Salad: The grain is quinoa, tomatoes, the last of the celery, red onions, and a bit of dried rye bread for crunch.

I was supposed to put dried cranberries but totally forgot!  That would have be even better.

Fortunately, the ingredients are things I always have on hand.  The recipe did 2 large bowls but I should make some ahead.  The dressing was tastier on the second bowl the next day.
