Puzzle Board - A good thing

This is the way my dining room table looks like most of the time.

I always have a tablecloth.

Here I have yellow placemats and the flowers my friend gave me 2 weeks ago is still looking good.  The lilies faded in a week but the mums are still bright.

There lurks a secret under there.

I bought a piece of hardboard which I had cut to the size of the top of the table.

I sanded the edges smooth.

Now it sits on top of a the secret lying under there.

Of course, when the table cloth is on one is the wiser.

There's a puzzle under the hardboard!

I just don't have enough space to dedicate a horizontal surface to just puzzle making.

I started puzzle making while I was away from home in temporary accommodation with little of my other crafting things at hand.

I understand it is good activity for my brain so I had to find a solution.

The hardboard was less than $20 so a project that did not break the bank.

The hardboard sits near the table while it is off the puzzle. This works great.

The box of extra pieces will be stored under the end table near my chair when the puzzle is covered.

I am really happy with this idea.

Sylvia' s Simple Shots

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was read this week. My brother-in-law lent me this book as he thought I would enjoy it.

This is the second book in the The Kingkiller Chronicle Trilogy.

The story is set in a fictional continent Temerant. The hero is the renowned Kvothe: an unequaled sword fighter, magician, and musician, rumored to have killed a king—earning the title Kingkiller. We learn about his early childhood where is loved, nurtured and educated by his parents and wise ones. When he is eleven he returns from the woods to find his parents and the full troupe killed by the evil Chandrian.  He survives on the streets. He is inspired to join the University to gain access to historical texts which may lead him to the Chandrian. He hones his magical skills, explores the subterranean areas below, makes friends and enemies.

During his time at the University he earns money playing his lute at the inn the town. He earns financial support based on his achievements. Denna, a musician, attracts his attention but she moves around a lot so a pursuit commences.  An excellent read.

I am so glad to be home! I have been away for 8 weeks while the asbestos was abated, the kitchen cupboards were rebuilt, the bathroom vanity was replaced and a bunch of painting and floor laying has been accomplished.

Things regular use and maintenance to operate properly.

I got home to find the shower spewing water where it should not be.   I had to have a bath the first day, not my favorite.

I headed to the Home Depot where the fellows have gotten to know me pretty well.  This time I found the right washer and some Teflon tape to seal the connection.

Added the washer, wrapped tape on the threads and screwed the shower head back on to supply pipe.
Ah! The shower is back in operation.

I take showers all the time.

A bath for me is when I have sore muscles and they need a soak to feel better.  I likely have 1-3 baths a year.

After making puzzles in my temporary accommodations I asked my self where I would have space to keep an unfinished puzzle.

My sister suggested a puzzle board on the dining room table.  A good idea.

I headed back to my favorite DIY - Home Depot and bought a piece of hard board cut at the store to be the exact size of the table top.

Generally, I keep a table cloth on the table so the board and puzzle can hide under there with no problem.

We had a party!

One of my sister's celebrate a big 0 birthday and invited family and friends to celebrate with her.

It was a great time to visit with extended family.

The food was great and company wonderful.  I was fortunate that one sister brought me and another sister brought me home.

I am grateful for the supper as I face getting my place back to a place where I can live again.

Things which were hastily packed will need to be unpacked and reorganized.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

A bit of a snack with the Sewing Group.

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and chocolate with a cup of tea!

Meeting with the Reconstruction team to talk about the damage done during abatement and the way forward.

A visit to see my sister in the country.

I had a good visit and my other sister came for a couple of hours.

This is Saturday morning as we all left early.  Them to a grandson's hockey game and be back to the city.

Finished my first puzzle while staying at the hotel.

It is a metaphor for life.

I was sure that there were some pieces missing because at time it did not make sense.

In the end after days and rearranging pieces put in one place but belonged elsewhere all the pieces fit.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

Its been a week for improvements in the sewing room department.

I have started buying distilled water for my steam iron which lessens the amount of times I have to clean it.  The cost is minimal about $2 and it is better all the way around.

I also found a water cup for the iron at the thrift store this week.  I have wanted one for a while and since I bought my iron second hand it did not come with one.

I have been reusing a disposable water bottle but it does not have the point to direct the water.

This cup works very well and it again was a bargain at the thrift store.

Another improvement in the sewing room was this clamp I found at the ReUse Center.

This the spool holder that my brother in law made me for Christmas a few years ago. It works well but the corner of my sewing desk is a bit short on space.  Whenever I pull the board to raise the machine it would topple over.

This clamp is minimal but very effective.  It has been quite a while since I have worried about not toppling the spool holder.

I found this small bag of buttons at the thrift store when I met my sister in Wetaskiwin a while back.

They are vintage for sure with metal inserts in the holes for reinforcement.  There are about 50 of them so I am sure there is a project where they will fit in perfectly.

I had a visit with my youngest sister for Family Day.

She had a couple of friends over and we talked crafts, sewing, and all manner of other stuff.

We managed to make this puzzle while we chatted.

It was nice to be with family.

Sylvia's Simple Shots

This is a Larch Tree bud. It looks like a beautiful bouquet of pink and green.  We have several trees in the park.  The morning sun made it look glorious.

A Larch tree is a coniferous tree which unlike it's cousins loses it's leaves in the fall.

We really need rain to clean things and get nature really greening up.   It feels things are a couple weeks late which is just as well since we have to stay home anyway.

We are scheduled to have some restrictions lifted in a couple of weeks but I have I'm not going to be one just getting out there and crazy shopping.  I will give it a couple of weeks and see how it goes. I do have a few things to get for some renovations I need so we shall see.

I want to thank Margy who left me a comment on last weeks post where I packed away the puzzle.

She suggested that she does puzzles on line where there is nothing to put away. You can decide the number of pieces, the subject matter and the type of pieces which adds some difficulty to the process.

This is exactly what I needed.  I can spent an hour on the internet, see nice art, work my brain a bit with an interactive activity and it just gets put away with no mess.

I have been using The Jigsaw Puzzles website.  I liked the variety of subject matter available - I have done flowers and art.

It dumps all the pieces on your workspace but you can ask to only see the edge pieces.  That is normally what I would with a physical puzzle. Once the edge is done then the rest of the pieces are shown.  I organize the pieces by color and start assembling shapes.  You can look at the image any time just like looking a the top of the box.  I have been doing 250 piece ones with the classic cut pieces.  Love it.

I decided to choose a few places along my walking route to plant a few flower seeds.   I think I have selected places that are pretty well lit.  Some of the seeds are very old so I don`t even know if they will grow.  They were predicting rain for today so I did that yesterday morning on my walk. Of course, if they grow I will have to take my chances that I can actually pick a few as other may think they are nice too.  I`m putting it out there to see what happens.

The rain came.  It was predicted that we would have big winds but it did not happen.  It started after supper yesterday, rained all night and it is still raining.  A nice steady rain which will soak things nicely without having flooding and washing away of dirt.

I expect that nature will respond wonderfully to this much needed moisture.  By the end of the week things will be green and wonderful.
I will keep an eye on my flowers.

The challenge at Flickr Macro Monday was kitchen but no food was allowed.   This is one of the shots I prepared for the challenge.

You can check my SMDPics photo stream to which shot I submitted.

The Other Day Captures

Spring is here!

She continues to bring forth new life as tender shoots burst through the ground, tiny purple flowers were in the sunniest spot, and the harbinger of spring the American Robin is back with her song.

My walks on the weekend were better than during the week for having people around.  I really enjoyed them with only seeing a few people social distancing so I could concentrate on the photography.

These are a few of the pieces I was able to put together in my puzzle in 4 days.

I have decided that puzzle making is not for me right now.  It takes precious space which I would rather use for sewing.

The pieces all went back into the box and it will go to my brother in law who makes the all the time.  It may go to Dad after that.  Not sure the subject matter would be appealing to Dad.

This was a great book.  We follow Hannah in the 1930's just before the Second World War was declared.  She is a Jew living in Germany so of course life is changing fast.  A new normal is in place for her.  Interesting parallel to our lives today.

Anna is the great grand daughter living in 2014 in New York. On her 12th birthday she receives a few photographs from Cuba.   What is this?  Her father died in 9/11 so it is her mother and her.  Her mother has not recovered from the loss of her husband so Anna is her caretaker.

The MS St. Louis cruise ship features in Hannah's story.

The photographs help to encourage Anna's mother and they plan a trip to Cuba. The stories come together and now they are linked becomes clear.

For me, the story comes across about living life defeated and not fighting back for the mothers of both of these 12 year olds.  I am blessed to say that grief has not visited often.

I put a few pretty things on the window sill this week.  Mostly dried stuff: dried wheat stalk, feathery greenery and curvy grasses. The ones on the right are dried seed heads from some flowers.  One yellow daisy showed up for my photography.

I was reminded of a book I took out of the library a few years ago called Window Sill Art.  You can check out my earlier post with the link above.

It became clear that I need to wash my windows.

Flickr Macro Monday theme this well was WindowSill so that is why I have been putting things out all week.  I love the morning sun in my dining room window.
You can check out my Flickr Photostream SMDPics as well to see what challenges I joined this week.

This is the puzzle I am going to make this week.  It is from Eurographics Puzzles and is a reproduction of Marc Chagall's - The Blue Violinist done in 1947.  He was a Russian French painter (1887-1985) raised in the Jewish faith who spent time in Paris in the early 20th century.  He traveled extensively and lived in the in several countries during his long life.

I see that I will need a bigger space than I thought to put this one together.  I will work on that.

I hope all the pieces are there as I did acquire it second hand.  Here' s hoping.

I did some coloring this morning the gorgeous sunshine which was really warm!  Considering that it was -18C at 7:00 am.  That's enough reason to stay inside.  This will become a card.  The coloring book originally appeared in this post.

I finished this book this week.  It was different to read a book written by a man with Kabul, Afghanistan as the setting for the story.  It takes place after the Taliban has taken over the city and affected the culture and place dramatically. The two couples in the story Moshen & Zunaira - wealthy and had careers and Atiq & Musarrat - now a prison keeper with his wife very sick and dying.  It is a very difficult life.

It has made me want to research more about Afghanistan history as they had very different lives before the Taliban.  The couples were more equal it seems before and now there is a drastic contrast in their every day lives.

Yasmina Khadra is the nom de plume of the Algerian army officer Mohammed Moulessehoulm, who is the author.  He took the feminine pseudonym to avoid submitting his manuscripts for approval by military censors while he was still in the army.

I took hundreds of photos this week in the above mentioned sunshine.

This is one of my shadow macro photos.  The object is a small black mesh half sphere in shape. Could be the top of a microphone possibly.

I love the intersection of the actual metal mesh and the shadow the sun created.  I find the shapes that result appealing.  The dark crescent shape created by the overlapping of 2 shadows is very cool.

The Flickr Macro Monday theme this week was "Shadow".

The mosaic on the right are a few of the photos I took.  You can check out my photo stream at www.flickr.com/photos/smdpics .

We had our fellowship group meeting today.  Our hostess was a recent retiree. I was on snack so I prepared Orange Bran Muffins with my sisters recipe.  It made 24 muffins and we were expecting 14 ladies.  They must have been good because I only brought 4 home.

I put together a Tupperware fruit tray including strawberries, cantaloupe, oranges and pomegranate.

Rounded out the selection with a variety of yogurt.

We collected yarn for a couple who does knitting for our Christmas Mitten Tree.

We had such a good time.

These books by Grace Livingston Hill have been on my bedside table recently.

Nice light romances in the early 1900s.  I enjoyed the novels by Hill but the one by her aunt Aldon was not as great for me.

We have had an injection of new books for the WtomyKitchen library so I will clear some of these at our Mission Possible Sale at the beginning of November.

I found this float frame at the ReUse Center on the weekend as my niece visited.

I think there are wonderful photography possibilities for this object.

I have placed a couple of my 4x6 photos in for now.

Love the angles of the stand on the back side.

I picked up this puzzle at the same center.  My niece spent an hour trying to solve it.  She came really close.

I picked it up because of the clear pieces which will surely be nice for photography.

I did find a solution on-line so I could assemble it and it would be awesome in photos.

The sunset was wonderful tonight.  I headed out a little late but I am happy with this shot.
